PVA Named 2016 Best Place to Work by the Albany Business Review

PVA is one of only nine companies recognized in the large company category. Awarded companies were selected based on feedback obtained by employee surveys evaluating overall satisfaction, benefits, room for advancement, and trust in management. This marks PVA’s first Best Places to Work award.

“Three years ago we first started committing to the Best Places to Work survey,” stated PVA President Tony Hynes, “Frankly, the initial feedback was not as positive as we had expected and provided us honest insight into areas needing improvement. As a company we embarked on a process requiring widespread buy in from our employees and management team. In the end, the goal was not simply to win an award, but to provide the best possible working experience for employees. To be recognized for those efforts is something we take tremendous pride in and validates our hard work.”

“Yes, the billiards table, dart boards, and ping pong games still exist,” added Human Resources Manager Kris Dzikas, “Ice cream Thursdays are a real thing and we have an RN, physical therapist, barber, and full time chef on staff. Over time, though, we found that our employees loved the benefits but wanted more structure, transparency, and clear routes for advancement. They wanted to be empowered.”

Over the past three years PVA has developed a production system with a shop floor focus. By empowering our employees and identifying them as our most valuable resource we can tap into their capacity to solve problems and have a direct influence on PVA’s success. Employees now have clear roles and a defined escalation structure to help them solve problems quickly.

“We want our employees to step up and say that something is wrong,” added Hynes. “Trying to work around a problem doesn’t get to the root cause. We want to identify issues, develop counter measures, and build in long term quality.  Our employees are recognized for this type of thinking and long term problem solving.”

This is the 13th year of the Best Places to Work award, which allows companies to highlight their workplaces and office culture. Being recognized as a Best Places to Work is a highly competitive honor with over 100 Capital Region businesses being nominated. PVA will be honored at an awards luncheon on December 2 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Troy, NY.

PVA has previously been recognized by the Albany Business Review in 1993 as an Emerging Enterprise.
