PVA Pro Tip #21: Choosing the Right Pumping System
Sealing the Deal
Transferring medium to high viscosity adhesives is often achieved by using an air driven pumping system. These pumps can be configured for various container sizes, but one of the most common is a five gallon pail. Pails are typically fabricated out of metal or plastic and can feature either a straight wall or a slight taper. While the pail design may seem trivial, it is critical to choosing a pumping system.
Pail pumps utilize a follower plate that sits on top of the adhesive to prevent foreign debris from contaminating the fluid system. The follower plate seals the inside walls of the pail and floats down with the fluid as it is pumped out of the pail.
When employing a straight wall pail, a simple semi-rigid follower plate that is compatible with the fluid is ideal. If using a tapered wall pail, a more flexible follower plate should be employed. This allows continuous sealing as the inner pail diameter narrows.
Overlooking this simple detail can lead to a poor seal or even a ruptured pail.
