Achieving Desired Coating Thickness: Pro Tip #7
Pro Tip #7: Smart Strategies for Optimal Conformal Coating
The Thin Line of Success
When it comes to conformal coating, more is not always better. Excess coating thickness can lead to several issues such as cracking, added mass, or simply increasing cost of your product. When using a solvent based acrylic or urethane, 25 to 75 microns is an average dry film thickness. Solvent-less coatings or UV cure products target 75 to 200 microns.
Prior to production, perform a thickness check using a wet film gauge. Placing the gauge directly onto a flat, freshly coated substrate, the notches will indicate the thickness of the coating. Laser, ultrasonic, or eddy current meters can provide precise measurement, but may require the coating to be cured prior.
